Surgical Extractions For Complex Cases

Remove Damaged Teeth And Prevent Complications

At The Legacy Dental Group, Dr. Jonathan Bookout believes in conservative care. This means that he’ll do his best to save your natural teeth whenever possible. But in some cases, tooth extraction may be the best way to remove a damaged tooth, prevent complications like oral infections, and restore your oral health.

Along with basic tooth extractions in Evans, GA, Dr. Bookout and our team offer surgical extractions for complex cases. We’re committed to your comfort and even provide sedation options to help you feel safe and comfortable throughout the entire process.

Why Would I Need A Surgical Extraction?

In many cases, damaged teeth can be extracted using a “basic” extraction process. This involves numbing your mouth, then using special tools to gently loosen the tooth in the socket and pull it out with no need for more extensive surgery.

However, in some cases, basic extractions cannot be used, and a surgical extraction may be needed instead. For example, if you have a wisdom tooth that’s growing into your mouth sideways, it may not be possible to pull it out with traditional dental tools. Or, if the top of your tooth is broken all the way down to the gumline, a basic extraction may not be possible.

In a surgical extraction, Dr. Bookout will make an opening in your gum tissue to access your tooth. Then, he will use surgical tools to cut the tooth into small pieces and remove them. Once he has removed all of the tooth, he’ll clean up the area and stitch it shut.

The Benefits Of Surgical Extractions

  • Painless procedure – While the process may seem intimidating, surgical extractions are a painless and straightforward procedure. Dr. Bookout will make sure the treatment area is completely numb, and we offer oral sedation to keep you feeling comfortable.
  • Get back to your routine – Tooth pain can be extremely debilitating and distract you from your work, school, family obligations, and much more. With surgical tooth extractions in Evans, GA, you can get immediate relief, and you’ll usually be able to get back to your normal routine within just a day or two of surgery.

  • Prevent complications – If you have a severely damaged, decayed, or infected tooth, it can spread bacteria throughout your mouth and cause other oral infections, or even sepsis, a life-threatening reaction to infection. Extracting your tooth eliminates the risk of complications and restores your oral health.

  • Prepare for tooth replacement – Replacing missing teeth is the best way to maintain your smile and preserve your oral health. At The Legacy Dental Group, we offer a variety of different options for replacing your missing tooth, including dental bridges and dental implants

What To Expect From The Surgical Extraction Process

Tooth preparation

First, Dr. Bookout will clean your mouth and numb the treatment area. If you need a little bit of help relaxing, he can also administer oral conscious sedation at The Legacy Dental Group. Together, sedation and local numbing ensure that you will have a comfortable, pain-free treatment experience.

Incision and tooth extraction

The next step is to create a small opening in your gums near the damaged tooth. This opening gives Dr. Bookout access to the tooth and its roots. Then, using special tools, he will cut the tooth into small pieces, removing each one through the opening in your gums. It usually takes about 30 minutes to remove a tooth, but this depends on its location, your oral anatomy, and a few other factors.

Stitches and finishing up

Once he has finished removing your tooth, Dr. Bookout will clean up and sanitize the treatment area. This eliminates any remaining bacteria and prevents infections. Next, he’ll stitch up the opening in your gums to ensure that it heals properly. If necessary, Dr. Bookout will repeat the entire process to remove any other damaged teeth.

Aftercare and recovery

You can usually get back to your normal routine within 1-2 days, but it will take up to two weeks for the extraction site to heal completely. To avoid complications like dry socket or infection, it’s important to follow Dr. Bookout's instructions closely as you recover.
